PARIS, Feb. 24 () -- Agriculture experts, manufacturers and government officials gathered on Friday at the annual meeting of OECD Tractor Codes to improve safety standards in farm machinery by expanding and updating the OECD's harmonized tests and codes."With more than 50 million tractors around the world, over a billion workers in the agriculture sector and billions of tons of food produced each year, OECD Tractor Codes play a crucial role enhancing labor safety, improving the environment and contributing to global food security," said Sandro Liberatori, Chair of the annual meeting on Tractor Codes.Around 30 OECD testing stations worldwide have assessed more than 3,000 tractor models since the first Code was established in 1959. With nearly one in two fatal workplace accidents taking place in agriculture, maintaining safety standards in farm machinery worldwide is crucial.At present 26 countries, including China, India and Russia, adhere to the OECD's harmonized tests and codes for tractors and agricultural machinery. But the challenges remain formidable.As more and more farmers migrate to urban areas, agriculture around the world is becoming increasingly mechanized.Growing concern at agricultural pollution and the sector's significant contribution to greenhouse gases present further challenges. The OECD tractor tests also assess criteria such as fuel consumption and engine performance.The annual Tractor Codes meeting gives machinery experts, government officials, business and farmers'representatives an opportunity to ensure that technical aspects of the tests are adapted to the latest developments and conditions.It also aims to extend safety and environmental standards to countries throughout Latin America, Africa and Asia through OECD partnerships with a number of UN and other international organizations.
