BEIRUT, April 5 () -- Internet and broadband subscriptions in Lebanon lag behind the soaring mobile usage in the region, said a report issued by United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), reiterating calls on the Lebanese government to liberalize the mobile sector."Mobile penetration rates in the region reached 86 percent at the end of 2010 and exceeded 170 percent in the Gulf Cooperation Council states," the Daily Star quoted Haidar Fraihat, information technology director of the ESCWA."But Internet subscription rates are still around 27 percent with broadband subscribers constituting less than 1.9 percent of the total population," Fraihat added, saying that the region's governments should focus on improving access to the Internet. He said Internet subscriptions grew 18 percent in 2009 and 2010 at rates higher than the global average of 13 percent. Broadband subscriptions, he said, grew by an impressive 60 percent, much faster than the 25 percent global figure. The Lebanese Telecoms Ministry said Internet subscriptions in Lebanon soared in the last six months after the government boosted the broadband capacity, slashed prices and increased speed eight times at least.Broadband prices in the region, the report showed, remain the second most expensive in the world when measured against GDP per capita.Despite improvements in Internet and land-line subscriptions, the report said Lebanon's failure to liberalize the mobile telecoms sector has taken a toll on the sector's overall competitiveness."The competition in the mobile sector prevails all over the region while four countries (including Lebanon) still experience duopoly," it said, placing Lebanon as worst in the region in terms of competitiveness. The report noted that growth in land-line subscriptions have been sluggish throughout the region, registering no growth during 2009 and 2010.It said increasing land-line subscriptions remains important as a prerequisite to increasing the Internet usage and broadband penetration in the region.
